There have been 3 major recalls this week. The first - kids' car seats manufactured by the Dorel Juvenile Group - I have already blogged about. But the past 24 hours has seen 2 major household names recall products designed not just for children, but in one case infants.
The Disney Corporation has recalled 1,200 kids' watches sold at its Walt Disney resorts after six children suffered reactions. Disney announced that the watches "can cause skin irritation and/or burning sensations to children who are allergic to nickel."
The popular furniture retailer Ikea has also announced a recall of its Sniglar line of cribs due to bolts being supplied with the flat-pack furniture not being long enough. The store reports that this presents a danger of the mattress support collapsing; "creating a risk of entrapment and suffocation to the baby."
Over the last 20 years, I have represented many families whose children have been injured by dangerous products which should never have been released to the marketplace. While I have won them the compensation they deserve for their misfortune, I would much rather never have to handle these cases at all. Big companies and their regulating bodies have become far too concerned about the bottom line that they now disregard all other concerns and rush their new products into stores before they have been sufficiently tested to ensure they are safe. I believe each of these companies deserves the negative PR they are now getting and can only hope that they will learn from their mistakes in the future.
