Although many school districts across Dallas and Fort Worth have already announced that they will remain closed for an unprecedented fourth day tomorrow, many people are already back on the roads either because they need to return to work or because they have all-important Super Bowl parties to attend. As a DFW Car Wreck Lawyer, I know the very real dangers that icy roads and cold weather present to motorists. Over the past few days there have been many truck accidents, car collisions and auto crashes across the metroplex.
Just as we are not used to these wintery conditions, neither are our vehicles so here is some advice for those of you venturing out from your Mother Nature-imposed hibernation:
Give yourself plenty of time
Adverse weather conditions inevitably mean your commute is going to take a lot longer than normal, so make sure that you give yourself lots of time to get where you're going. There are plenty of unusual obstacles due to the icy roads so you certainly don't want to feel like you're in a rush when you get behind the wheel.
Warm up your car
Most likely your car or motorcycle has been sitting untouched on your driveway for the past few days so it is important that you anticipate it taking longer than usual to warm up and get started in the morning. Often the gas and oil have cooled so they have trouble circulating effectively and due to chemical reactions in batteries making it difficult to start the engine.
Be mindful of the icy roads
While workers have been busy sanding roadways remember that there are still plenty of treacherous patches of road out there. Drive slowly and make sure you leave plenty of space between the car in front of you. Break gently to avoid skidding.
