Arlington Seeking Stricter Collection of Red Light Fines

Sometimes a motorist runs a red light because they were too busy texting to notice the traffic signal change color. Other times, they see the light change to amber and decide to floor it to try and beat the light, thinking that saving a few seconds is more important than the lives of others. Whatever the reason for running a red light, you are creating a huge danger for both your safety and your passengers' safety, in addition to the safety of other cars, trucks and motorcycles. As a Tarrant County personal injury lawyer I fully support the use of red light camera as a deterrent which has been proved to reduce the number of fatal intersection wrecks.

Arlington has seen a significant reduction in auto accidents at intersections following the implementation of red light cameras in the city. A study by the Texas Transportation Institute actually showed such crashes have fallen by 67 percent due to the cameras. Encouraged by this success, Arlington is keen to further bolster their stance against violators by participating in Texas' scofflaw program, which means any driver caught running a red light will be unable to renew their vehicle registration until they've paid any and all red light tickets issued by the city.

I think this is a great idea. Currently, since a right light ticket is technically a civil violation, the city has no way to compel these negligent motorists to pay up. By joining the scofflaw program, this would change. This is yet a further encouraging step that Arlington takes traffic safety extremely seriously, coming as it does soon after the City Council recently voted in favor of a proposed ban on distracted driving last month.

Dallas County already participates in the state's scofflaw program, and Haltom City and Richland Hills have also expressed interest in signing up.
