Given the large number of very serious traffic wrecks we see throughout the Fort Worth-Arlington area we see every day, it's easy to overlook some of the other personal injury cases which we regularly see here at the Anderson Law Firm. As a dog owner myself, it never ceases to surprise me just how frequent injury-causing dog attacks occur in DFW and throughout the North Texas region.
According to the Center for Disease Control, the majority of dog attacks occur either near the home or in a familiar place which makes it incredibly likely that the owner of the dog responsible for the attack will be someone you know. In fact, it is estimated that over three quarters of all biting dog are owner by friends or family members of the victim. In these situations, people typically try to avoid making a claim for fear of hurting the negligent owner.
There is absolutely no reason you should feel this way. If you make a claim for compensation, you do so against the dog owner's home insurance - not against the dog owner directly. You are not hurting them in any way by making a claim. This is why we all buy insurance in the first place, after all!
Given the severity of dog attack injuries (facial scars, disfigurements, tissue loss, fractured bones, etc.) it is ridiculous to expect that you can pay for your sudden and unexpected medical costs out of your own pocket. Texas law gives you the right to make a claim, and if it's the insurance company which is responsible for footing the bill, there should be no reason for you to not make a claim.
