Beat The Heat (Like Dirk)

As a Dallas-Fort Worth personal injury lawyer I often give adivce on what to do to stay safeon the roads and avaoid a car wreck or a motorcycle collision. Accidents can happen to anyone. Since the summer weather is now defnitely upon us, I thought I would share some tips on how to stay cool and avoid heat-realted injuries.

Everybody knows that Texas gets crazy hot during the summer months (if this is your first summer in the Lone Star State, then boy are you in for a treat). Here is some advice to keep you cool and well while also being mindful of your energy costs:

At home
Keep your thermostat at 78 degrees, any cooler than that and you could see up to a ten percent increase in your electricity bill. Instead, put your ceiling fans on the highest settings so that the cool air will be forced back down. Even a freestanding electric fan can make the room feel cooler by four degrees without dramatically upping your power usage. Replacing your air conditioning filters on a monthly basis (medium grade vents are recommended) can also help your unit run more efficiently.

On the go
The breeze of the open road helps to cool motorcyclists during the summer, but it's still vital that you stay hydrated. A common misconception among car drivers is that opening the windows rather than using the A/C will save you gas. Actually, the opposite is true - open windows increase drag, so go ahead and enjoy that cool internal air.

In person
Children and the elderly are most at risk from heat-related injuries, but no-one is immune to 100 degree weather. Stay in the shade as much as possible and make sure you're drinking plenty of cool water. If you start feeling nauseous or dizzy, hold an ice pack or cold wet cloth to your forehead.

Remember that summer is also the perfect time to indulge in plenty of ice cream and snow cones too!
