A bicyclist died after a collision with a DART bus Monday night in the Pleasant Grove area of Dallas, Texas. The man was riding his bike near a bus stop on Bruton Road when he was struck about 7 p.m. near Corvette Drive. He was reportedly riding into oncoming traffic when he fell in front of the bus. The driver was unable to stop in time and ran over the bicyclist.
The victim was taken by ambulance to Dallas Regional Medical Center in Mesquite, where he died about 7:20. His name was not released pending notification of family members. Ball said the driver was tested for alcohol and drugs and placed on paid administrative leave pending the results. The accident is under investigation by DART police.
Although this accident is still under investigation, I can’t help but wonder why the bicyclist was riding against traffic on a busy street and not wearing a helmet. Bicycle helmets can reduce head injuries by 85 percent. However by just wearing a helmet and getting hit by a big bus probably won’t save your life that’s why it is important to be aware of your surroundings and make sure you are seen by other drivers. The accident happened at 7 p.m. and that’s when the sun is down so it would have been harder to see the bicyclist.
