Traffic stalled on State Highway 114 Friday afternoon after an 18-wheeler overturned into a ditch near the Texas Motor Speedway. The truck was hauling rocks with a tandem trailer when it rolled over into a ditch near Double Eagle Boulevard at 12:14 p.m.
The driver was trapped inside the cab as diesel fuel spilled from the truck, but he was later freed from the wreckage and taken by ambulance to Denton Regional Medical Center. The crash left the highway's westbound lane closed but traffic was being diverted through the speedway. Other details aren't available at this time as officers are still investigating the accident.
Semi-trucks can flip more easily than a car because they are top heavy. Additionally, these big trucks typically weigh around 10,000 pounds. The driver of the truck is very lucky to survive the accident and also lucky that the diesel gas didn't cause an explosion. Semi-trucks account for three percent of vehicles registered on the road, but account for 25 percent of car accidents in the United States.
