Considering that the majority of personal injury claims I encounter as a Fort Worth PI Attorney are the result of an auto accident, I am a keen supporter of any effort to make the roadways around the DFW Metroplex safer for all of us. Residents of the Castle Hills community near Denton and Lewisville have taken matters into their own hands in order to reduce dangerous driving on their local streets. Realizing that speeding in particular was a problem issue for their neighborhood, they have introduced warning signs which will detect and display a passing car’s speed in an effort to get them to slow down.
The community effort is being led by Castle Hills resident John Ehinger, Jr. who believes that getting drivers to slow down while driving through the neighborhood will make for a much more pleasant community for everyone to enjoy as pedestrians will feel safer to walk the neighborhood roads and parents will be more willing to let their children go outside to play. In addition to what they have already accomplished, Ehinger also wants Castle Hills to join Keep Kids Alive’s Drive 25 campaign to further educate the public on the dangers of speeding in a residential area since learning that a pedestrian hit by a car driving 25 mph is three times more likely to survive than one hit in a 30 mph zone.
Nationwide, more than 4000 people die each year while out walking their neighborhood streets. Very often the cause of these fatalities is because the vehicle which hit them was speeding. We can all play a part in making our roads safer, whether we are driving through our own neighborhood or visiting someone else’s. Obey the speed limit - it is there for a reason and can actually improve your fuel efficiency. We all want to get wherever we’re going as quickly as possible, but I doubt anyone would want to be guilty of running down a neighbor’s child. Slow down.
