James Pierce, 52, of Cleburne, was killed in a motorcycle accident last night. The motorcycle he was driving collided with a car on a Farm Road 3048 in Johnson County. Pierce was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car, Robert Beaty, 62, of Cleburne, was not injured. Beaty was driving eastbound on when he attempted to turn and collided with Pierce who was on his 2003 Harley Davidson.
A biker is 37 times more likely to die in a crash than an occupant of an automobile. I hear all the time that the driver of vehicles “just don’t see” the motorcycle. I don’t know if that’s the case here, but something went wrong. Additionally, according to the newspaper, Mr. Pierce was not wearing a helmet. It might have saved his life. In 2006, 346 motorcycle riders died in Texas and only a third were wearing helmets.
