CPSC Releases Child Drowning Statistics for 2010 Swimming Season

Earlier this week the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) and the HSC (Home Safety Council) released figures regarding the Nation’s 2010 “Pool Summer Safety Snapshot.”  The snapshot highlights statistics about child drownings  that happened from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend. This year, there were over 350 child drownings and non-fatal incidents during the 2010 swimming season.  In Texas, there were 12 drownings and 17 non-fatal incidents.

There are so many things that parents and supervisors can do to prevent child drownings and injuries around the pool. The first and most important thing to do is to create a safe environment around the perimeter of the pool by using barriers that will not let children into the pool area unsupervised. In addition, the majority of drownings happen when an adult is present, but took their attention away from the pool area.  Supervision is the primary form of prevention for poolside accidents.

The Anderson Law Firm has many resources how to prevent common child injuries. As a parent, Mark Anderson is an advocate for kids, and believes they need a strong voice on their side. This information and commentary is provided by Fort Worth Personal Injury Attorney Mark A. Anderson of the Anderson Law Firm.  The Anderson Law Firm can be reached in Fort Worth at 817-204-1900 or in Dallas at 214-327-8000.  If you have questions about a child injury or other personal injury fill out our contact form for a free consultation.
