A concrete truck overturned on Interstate 30 near downtown Dallas on Thursday, setting off a chain-reaction crash over the Trinity River that critically injured two people and slowed traffic for more than five hours. The chaos began about 1 p.m. Thursday when the westbound concrete mixer slammed through a median and flipped into oncoming traffic on the Interstate 30 bridge.
Witnesses reported that the concrete truck and an 18-wheeler may have struck one another, causing the mixer to skid out of control. The concrete truck hit a tractor-trailer, two sport utility vehicles and two other cars. The crash resulted in seven people taken to area hospitals. Two of the victims, 25- and 52-year-old men, were taken to Methodist Dallas Medical Center in serious but stable condition. Authorities had not identified any of the people involved in the accident.
Many people involved were trying to free a man trapped in his sedan, which was crushed below the cab of one of the 18-wheelers. That man appeared to be the most seriously injured. Some men went back to their vehicles for tools, anything that would help pry open the door. They returned wielding a hammer, a crow bar and a fire ax. After a few minutes of tearing through metal, they were able to free the unconscious man.
I am very impressed by the citizens that helped the victims of this crash, without their help there possibly could have been fatalities. In 2007, 4,808 people were killed in 18 wheeler accidents in Texas. Everyone involved is very fortunate to be alive. Although all the facts of who is at fault in this collision are uncertain, it will be interesting to understand how this accident started.
