A Fort Worth man was behind bars Sunday after police accused him of stealing a pickup,
kidnapping his ex-girlfriend's 4-year-old grandson and crashing the truck into a vehicle driven by an off-duty Fort Worth firefighter.
Witnesses told Fort Worth police that the 57-year-old pickup driver, Roy Dorsey,
drove through several red lights at high speed before he crashed the vehicle in the 5600 block of Bryant Irvin Road in Fort Worth.
The wreck disabled the pickup at that intersection, where police arrested Dorsey. The boy told police that he wasn't injured but was taken to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth for observation.
The driver of the other automobile, firefighter Mark Puente, was critically injured. Puente was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
After stealing a pickup truck, Dorsey had a brief conversation with his ex-girlfriend. He then grabbed the boy, put him in the truck and drove away, crashing through a fence, police said.
Dorsey faces charges of theft, aggravated kidnapping, leaving the scene of an accident and endangering a child.
It is times like these when I wonder what people are thinking when they do senseless acts such as this. Not only did Dorsey steal a pickup truck, he then kidnapped a child and seriously injured another man. Hopefully, Puente will be able to survive this terrible car accident.
It is important to follow the rules of the road, like not speeding or going through red lights, because these kinds of accidents can happen. And I am sure it is understood that hijacking a truck and stealing a child are wrong on many levels.
