What a week! Not only is it spring break, which means a lot more traffic on Fort Worth roads, but the selections for March Madness were announced yesterday! I look forward to March Madness all year - I love making my bracket, trash-talking with friends and watching the underdog win. For lots of people, a March Madness office pool is a springtime tradition. But before you put any money down it's important to know: is betting on college sports even legal? The short answer to that question is no - it's really not.
Betting on college sports is only legal in Nevada. Although it's highly unlikely the FBI would shut down your interoffice gambling ring, employers need to know that betting on March Madness can pose some serious legal liabilities. For example, if you own the property where your workplace is located and the FBI comes knocking at your door, then you are subject to the same criminal liability as the organizers and participants of the office pool. That means even if you weren't involved in a single bet, you can still face charges for the gambling going on in your office.
I tend to believe the FBI has better things to do than to bust up inter-office gambling, but you never know. So in order to keep everyone legal this spring, we've started a March Madness contest at the Anderson Law Firm. It's free for anyone to enter, all you have to do is submit your bracket for the chance to win an iPad. Click here to register and enter. Good luck everyone!!!
