General Motors Recalls Trucks For Child Safety Seats | Car Accident Lawyer Mark A. Anderson

General Motors has announced a recall that impacts thousands of drivers in Texas and nearly 200,000 drivers in the United States. The company has recalled mid size pickup trucks due to a defect in the child restraint system.  General Motors is aware that this defect could greatly impact the safety of children if a car accident were to happen.

If a child safety seat is placed in the center of the front seat, parents will be unable to access the top anchor and the owner's manual gives no instructions on how to access the anchor. The car seat must be tethered to the top anchor to properly install it. An improperly installed child restraint system can cause severe and permanent injuries to children in the event of a car accident. To fix the situation dealers will cut the trim of the defective vehicles to gain access to the top anchor. This service will be provided free of charge and owners of the defective vehicles will be notified by dealers to schedule their repair session.

General Motors in conjunction with The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does not recommend parents placing child safety seats in the front seats of vehicles, however they know there are times when it may be necessary in vehicles with no back seats. Almost 200,000 vehicles were named in the recall covering 2004 to 2011 model year Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups with bench front seats and no rear seats. The 2006 model year Isuzu I-280 and I-350 and 2007-2008 model year Isuzu I-370 are also being recalled due to the defect.

I am glad that General Motors has gone public and made their customers aware of these problems. Child safety seats are very important ifor the safety of children in the event of a car accident. An important thing to remember that all children under the age of 8 and shorter than 4 feet 9 inches must be secured in a child safety seat while in a vehicle.
