This weekend all of us in North Texas got a mini break from the 100 degree weather, but as many of us already knew, the extreme heat would return! Temperatures this week are in the 100s again and although it's important to make sure you stay healthy during all this heat, don't forget about your car. Remember - while you work inside in cool air conditioning, your car is sitting outside under the blazing sun and eventually, it can cause damage to your vehicle that could increase your chance of breaking down. Working as a personal injury attorney in Fort Worth, so many of my clients car accidents have been caused when they were stopped on the side of the road and got hit. To protect your car from breaking down, do the following:
Check your tires: High temps will build up pressure in your tires and increase your chance of having a blowout, especially in tires that are worn. Tire blowouts cause lots of car accidents in DFW, so to prevent your tires from bursting, grab a penny. (No seriously, grab a penny.) Put the penny upside down in the groove of your tires. Can you see the top of Lincoln's head? If so it's time for new tires because you don't have the minimum 2/32-inches of tire thread. Don't just measure your tires at one point either, tires wear unevenly so check everywhere.
Replace your windshield wipers: But it hasn't rained in weeks you say? Well, it will rain again someday and when it does, you'll need your windshield wipers so you can see. Rubber wipers shrivel up and become worthless when it's so hot. Once that happens they do a terrible job removing water and dirt from your windshield. Replace them now, (it only cost $10) and you won't have to worry about it when that monsoon hits us. (Wishful thinking?)
