High School Teens Against Distracted Driving in Fort Worth Texas

Recently I have visited three of six Tarrant County high schools that are participating in the 2010 TADD project. I am completely amazed with what these students are doing and how hard they have been working to raise awareness of distracted drivers. The campaign ends this Friday the 29th and the results of which school has the highest percentage of pledges signed is a close call. Students have been rallying at lunches and in between classes to get other students to sign a pledge to not text message while driving.

I found a couple of statistics about distracted driving that I would like to share with you:
• Teenagers that drive and text have reaction times similar to a seventy year old person.
• Drivers on mobile phones are more impaired than drivers at .08 BAC.
• More than 80% of drivers admit to blatantly hazaradous behavior: changing clothes, steering with a foot, painting nails, etc.
• Distracted driving is the number one killer of American Teens and alcohol related deaths with teens is dropping.
• Driving while distracted is a factor in 25 percent of police reported crashes.

Distracted driving is a growing fatality epidemic and I believe in educating people before it is ultimately too late. If you have been in a car accident from a distracted driver you have legal rights.
