Ice Storm 2011 | North Texas Accident Attorney Blog

Ice storm 2011 slammed North Texas early this morning and boy did we get hit hard!  I hope most of you are enjoying a day home with your families and stocked up on enough food to get you through tonight.

Temperatures aren't supposed to get much warmer until the end of the week, which means streets will be very slick for at least a few more days. Although most of the roads are deserted today, I'm sure by tomorrow more people will try and brave the roads.   For more than 20 years I've worked as a car accident attorney in Fort Worth and know from experience just how dangerous our roads can be. Add ice to equation and it's basically a recipe for disaster!   If you are itching to get out of the house tomorrow, please be careful and remember a few of these winter weather safe driving tips:

  1. Look for trouble ahead. Bridges and over passes are notorious for black ice. If you see shiny patches you know water or ice is on the road, but black ice can look duller and darker than the rest of the pavement.
  2. Go SLOW! This seems kind of obvious doesn't it? Still, even if you have an all wheel drive, snow-dominating vehicle-slow down! Even 4-wheel drive cars are not immune to ice related accidents.
  3. Put more space between your car and the car in front of you.  This way, if your car does slip on ice, you'll have that much further to go before hitting the car in front of you.
  4. Don't jerk your wheel or slam on the breaks. Even if you begin skidding on ice, stay calm and try not to immediately slam on the breaks.  Slamming on your breaks and jerking your wheel will only exasperate your situation.  If you begin to slip, tap your breaks lightly and turn your wheel in the direction of the skid.

I hope you all remind yourselves of these tips and remember what to do after an auto accident.  Stay safe and warm y'all!

These are good tips. I'm from Connecticut and this weather is common. But as a person doing business in Texas I hope you weather stays warm for my next trip.
