Latonia Renee Lyons, 36, had just got off work before she was in a horrible car accident that killed her early Saturday morning. She was a very hard worker as a nurse's aid at a northeast Dallas assisted living center and often worked doubles. Latonia, single mother of three from Dallas, enjoyed a day off Friday and while on her way to work Saturday morning, she was killed when a passing motorist driving a Porsche Cayman struck her disabled Ford Taurus on U.S. Highway 75 at about 6 a.m. The driver of the Porshe, was not charged, but police said a criminally negligent homicide case was filed and will be referred to a grand jury. His visibility was about 900 feet. Lyons was driving north on the expressway when her Taurus stalled just north of SMU Boulevard in the 6200 block of North Central Expressway. She turned on her hazardous lights and pulled to the right shoulder as best as she could, but left a portion of her car in the far-right driving lane. The driver hit the back of Lyons' Taurus, sending it flipping end over end with her inside before it came to rest on its roof 60 feet away. Dallas fire and rescue had to cut Lyons from the wreck before she went to Baylor University Medical center where she died. The driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene. Police are still investigating but said drugs and alcohol were not believed to be factors in the car accident.
A thorough investigation will help reveal what exactly caused the accident. Obviously, her car being partially in the lane had something to do with it, but why did the Porsche driver not see the car? How fast was the Porsche going? Was the Porsche driver distracted? It’s always best to get in the furthest lane possible if one sees a car on the shoulder. I can't imagine being in such a situation that Lyon's was in. She was a hard working woman who deserves to be alive. My thoughts go out to her family and friends.
