A child may have been driving one of the two recreational boats that collided on Lake Lewisville Sunday afternoon, injuring four adults and eight children, a spokeswoman with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said. The adults and children were wearing life jackets and the boats had been rented at Just for Fun by families from Garland. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, which happened about noon just north of the Lake Lewisville Toll Bridge.
A 10-year-old boy had surgery Sunday night at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. His condition was unavailable. The other adults and children also were taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, Denton Regional Medical Center and Lewisville Medical Center.
Parks and Wildlife officials were investigating the crash, but they had not determined a cause. Hopefully, everyone involved in this boating accident will come out in stable condition. The fact that a child may have been driving one of the boats is unacceptable. Boats are just as dangerous as cars when an inexperienced driver is at the wheel.
Remember to follow proper boating etiquette when operating this type of motor vehicle. Thankfully, everyone was said to be wearing a life-jacket which is crucial when out on the water. Water-related crashes kills, on average, about 700 people per year. Boating safety is not something to be taken lightly when out at a lake.
