Early Monday morning, the driver of a white Hyundai was killed in a truck accident on the Sam Rayburn Tollway (Highway 121) at Custer Road. Around 2 a.m. the driver of the car for some reason drifted into the right-hand guardrail on the northbound lane. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the car bounced off the guardrail into the center lane and was then hit by an 18-wheeler that was unable to stop.
No one else was injured in the accident, but the northbound lanes of Highway 121 near the accident site will remain closed until around noon. At this time it is unknown what caused the driver of the Hyundai to hit the guardrail.
At my injury law firm in Fort Worth, we see plenty of accidents that are caused by large commercial trucks, but it’s not always the truck driver’s fault. All of us in regular cars must remember that these truck drivers are driving massive, heavy loads and cannot stop as quickly or maneuver as easily as regular vehicles. For this reason, it is especially important that we do not increase our risk of being involved in an 18-wheeler accident by driving under the influence, text and driving or by being a drowsy driver. Although it is unknown exactly what caused this accident, I want to take the opportunity to remind drivers to check themselves during this holiday season: don’t drink and drive, don’t text and drive and please – don’t get behind the wheel of a car if you are extremely tired. Pull over in a parking lot and take a nap; it could save your life.
