Two men were hospitalized in Dallas this morning after separate bicycle collisions along the White Rock Lake trail. The first incident occurred about 6:45 a.m. when a pedestrian in his 70 or 80s was struck by a cyclist near West Lawther Drive and Kimberly Lane. The elderly man, who was not identified, had no obvious injuries but was taken to Baylor University Medical Center for precautionary tests."Older patients have decreased sensation when they get injured and don’t feel as much as a younger person would," said Jason Evans a spokesman for Dallas Fire-Rescue.
The second crash occurred about 8:45 am when two bikers collided at the same intersection. One of them, whom police identified as 43-year-old Kenneth Kristofek, was taken to Baylor where he remains in the emergency room, a hospital spokesperson said. She did not release his condition. The other cyclist had a cut above his left eye and swelling to the left side of his face, but refused medical attention, Evans said.
This is the third bicycle accident in the week. Last week a 28-year old jogger died from a collision with a bicyclist. In Texas alone, in 2008 pedestrian fatalities totaled 438. It seems like every week, we hear of an incident here in the Dallas Fort Worth area where a pedestrian has been run over by a moving vehicle. A couple of things one can do to be a safe pedestrian are obey crossing rules and look out for approaching drivers/riders because they can come out of nowhere.
