It seems to be even police officers are prone to getting in car accidents. Last night, a Grand Prairie police car responding to a call got into a wreck with another vehicle in Arlington. According to the accident investigators, the cop was on his way to a call but wasn't using his flashing lights or siren when a sedan with two people in front of it, causing the impact. All three motorists were taken to the hospital, but luckily everyone is okay.
No word yet on how fast the officer was going at the time of the wreck. This raises the question: when should police in DFW use their flashing lights and sirens? Earlier this week there was major controversy when a Dallas Constable did not chase a kidnapping suspect due to the lack of sirens and lights on their car. Now I wonder what people will think of a police officer chasing to the scene of a crime not using their lights and getting into a wreck.
When are police officers supposed to use their lights? Personally, I'd rather the sirens be on so I know to stay out of the officers way - but then, can these sirens be overused and linked to even more car wrecks in Arlington and the rest of DFW? The answer is unclear to me.
