Proper Helmet Fit Can Save Your Child’s Life

Make Sure Your Kid's Football Helmet FitsIt seems like every day in DFW, I hear about another kid getting injured or even killed after sustaining a concussion playing school sports. Every parent and coach knows kids need to wear helmets in contact sports like football, but wearing the helmet is only the first step: it has to fit correctly, too.

I recently posted an article on my website about how to fit your child properly for a bike helmet after I learned that a properly fitted bike helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent! Guess what? The same is true for a properly fitted football helmet. Here are some tips to make sure your wide receiver is safe on the field:

  • Look that the helmet is lined up with the player's ears
  • Feel that the helmet has contact with the back of the head
  • The jaw pads should touch the skin
  • Padding should touch the top of the head and around all sides
  • When you shake the facemask, the skin should move on the cheeks and the forehead

Just like with bike helmets, a properly fitted football helmet is the most important protection for the player. Hopefully, these tips will help the quarterback in your house.
