Rear-end Truck Collisions Increase Risk of Decapitation

According to a new report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, passengers in cars which crash into the back of 18-wheeler trucks have a high risk of suffering death by decapitation. As a Ft. Worth personal injury lawyer, this is gravely concerning. Traffic collisions involving commercial trucks are nearly always extremely serious, and motorists involved in such accidents usually suffer severe injuries. This report, however, cites that the underride guard found at the back of big rigs which is supposed to prevent life-threatening injuries does not do the job it is supposed to.

The underride guard is a metal bar which runs the width of the back wheels across the back of the tractor trailer. In the event of a rear-end collision, the underride guards is meant to prevent a car from traveling beneath the truck, but test crashes have revealed that the guard rails fail even at slower speeds which simulate slow-moving roads. Accidents often occur in such circumstances as drivers fail to notice the truck in front braking sharply in stop and go traffic.

Although many cars perform very well in most test impact wrecks by absorbing crash energy and redirecting it around the vehicle, nearly all cars perform far worse in rear-end truck collisions, which is particularly concerning given the height of passengers' heads in the car, versus the height of the underside of a big rig truck. Drivers should always keep their wits about them and pay close attention to the vehicle in front of them. Always leave enough space in case the truck in front breaks suddenly or quickly. Remember to follow with enough distance between you so that you can see the truck's mirrors - if you can't see their mirrors, then the driver can't see you!
