Safety Tips for Trick-Or-Treating This Halloween

Ghosts, vampires and witches will be roaming the streets of Dallas-Fort Worth on October 31st, scaring people door to door in exchange for treats.

There are plenty of urban legends about Halloween, but it is possible to both have fun and be safe. Most Halloween safety tips are common sense, but here are a few that might not be so obvious:

  • Make sure that your costume won't make you trip, because most Halloween injuries are the result of accidental falls.
  • Store-bought costumes are preferred over homemade because they should already be designed with safety in mind and be fire-retardant.
  • Motorists should pay extra care when driving through residential neighborhoods and be on the look out for children wearing dark clothing at dusk and later.
  • Parents can make children more visible by adding reflective tape to costumes or shoes. Glow in the dark sacks or buckets for treats are also a good idea.
  • Kids need to see where they're going too, so facial make-up is generally preferred over masks. If a mask is worn, make sure it has very large eye holes.
  • If you're going to be welcoming trick or treaters, also make sure there are no tripping hazards in your front yard and that there are absolutely no candles or other open flames.

Whatever your plans for Halloween this year, I wish you all a safe and enjoyable time.
