Yesterday, news outlets around Dallas and Fort Worth broke the story that a recent graduate of SMU, Allison Owens, had been found dead in San Giovanni Valdarno, Italy. The Southern Methodist University Graduate had been working in Italy as a tour guide and had been missing three days after she disappeared while taking a jog. Italian authorities are continuing their investigation, but said they believe Owens died in a hit-and-run car accident.
SMU released this statement regarding Owens' death:
"The SMU community mourns the loss of Allison Owens, a 2010 graduate, who has been reported dead in Italy of an apparent hit-and-run car accident. In 2010 Allison was named the Outstanding Student in Non-profit Management in the Division of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs in SMU's Meadows School of the Arts. We extend our thoughts and prayers to her family and other loved ones during this difficult time."
It's hard to believe that someone could hit such a beautiful young woman with their car and speed off without helping them, but it happens all the time in Texas and apparently the rest of the world. At my personal injury law firm in Fort Worth, we often represent people whose lives have changed forever since their hit-and-run accidents. I can only imagine what the Owens' family is feeling right now and want them to know our prayers are with them. Hopefully the Italian police can find the criminal that did this and bring them to justice.
