Student From Plano Dies In Austin Balcony Accident

A Dallas-Fort Worth teenager died in Austin on Monday after falling from a fifth floor balcony. Richard John Holland, 19 of Plano, was a sophomore studying Business at the University of Texas. Witnesses say they saw Holland leaning against the railing of an apartment balcony before falling 50 feet to his death. Police believe the fatality to be completely accidental and there is no indication that alcohol was a factor. The tragedy is made especially sad as Holland had been looking forward to celebrating his 20th birthday on Labor Day.

I'd like to express my most sincere condolences to Holland's family and friends. I'm sure that he will be incredibly missed. As a North Texas personal injury lawyer, I can't help but be troubled by this deadly accident. I suspect that given that this apartment complex was university housing, the design and construction of the balconies likely comply with all building codes. But just like the man who recently fell at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, such a tragedy causes you to consider whether regulations are safe enough. In my opinion, one unnecessary death is too many.

Currently the official investigation into cause of Mr. Holland's accident remains unresolved. I hope that once it is concluded, it provides his loved ones with the answers and the closure that they need.
