The Texas House has approved a bill that would allow an 85 mph speed limit on some Texas highways. That would the highest speed limit in the nation!
Wednesday the House passed the measure as part of a larger transportation bill. The bill would allow the Texas Department of Transportation to raise the speed limit on designated stretches of highway after conducting engineering and traffic studies of that roadway.
Reading this today - I have to admit I was a little surprised. I've lived in Fort Worth, Texas most of my life and anybody from around this area knows that Texans speed. The speed limit may say 65 mph but if you look around while you're driving, everybody's going 70-80 mph.
I have mixed feelings on raising the speed limit. My first thought is that raising the speed limit really won't change much. People already speed! But then I start to think this bill could really increase the risk of getting into an auto accident in Texas.
Could this bill be steering North Texan drivers in the wrong direction? Should we really increase the speed limit if Texas drivers naturally have an inclination to speed?
