Several homes in Melissa, Texas had to be evacuated Wednesday afternoon when a truck overturned spilling dangerous chemicals into a ditch. Around 12:30 p.m. on Highway 5 near FM 543, a truck from Douglass Distribution strayed off the highway. The truck slipped off the highway due to road construction and landed in a mud pit. Yellow fluid quickly pooled around the vehicle after the truck accident.
Officials haven't determined exactly what the yellow fluid is, but the Hazardous Materials code on the truck was 1268, which falls under the U.S. Department of Transportation's list for aviation fuel. Strong fumes could be smelled after the Hazmat spill, but no injuries have been reported. The condition of the truck's driver is still unknown.
In DFW, we drive around Hazmat trucks all the time and don't even know it. Truck accidents in Texas are scary enough, but get involved in a wreck with a Hazmat truck and your troubles will triple. What's even worse is that you don't even have to be hit by one of these semi-trucks to be affected by them. Just like in this story, when the contents of Hazmat trucks spill, it can contaminate the air, soil and water of those living or traveling around the area. The people affected by this spill in Melissa are doing the right thing by evacuating and taking this Hazmat truck wreck seriously. Until they know exactly what those chemicals were, it's better safe than sorry.
