As a Tarrant County personal injury lawyer I have worked with many bikers and their families over the past 20 years. I know that the vast majority of motorcycle accidents are the fault of negligent car drivers. But motorcyclists have a responsibility themselves. They should be aware that chances are other drivers haven't noticed them - and take advantage of any safety equipment that's available to them.
While the fortunate survivor of that dramatic motorcycle collision video continues making the different TV shows and other media outlets, two more recent wrecks serve as grim reminders that most auto accidents involving motorcyclists end in tragedy.
Len and Connie Nichols of Weatherford were riding together when they attempted to pass a pick-up truck on Friday. The driver did not see them and attempted to make a turn. The husband and wife were rushed to the hospital immediately following crash. Connie died at the hospital. Len's injuries required an emergency leg amputation and he is still reported to be in critical condition.
Also on Friday, Martin Thiessen was killed while riding his motorcycle in Burleson. According to police reports, Thiessen was not wearing a helmet when he collided with an SUV at the intersection of East Renfro and Clark Streets. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger in the vehicle which struck him were unharmed.
My thoughts are with the families and friends of Len and Connie Nichols and Martin Thiessen at this most difficult time.
