Two young college students were killed in a car crash Monday morning. A Montgomery woman, Rachel Ripley Yasso, 21 and her boyfriend, Trace Cole Thornton, 22, of Spring, were killed when their SUV struck the rear end of an 18-wheeler making a turn off Highway 6 in Robertson County, southeast of Waco. The driver of the truck, Bobby Ray Perry, of Fort Worth, was not injured. Yasso and Thornton, who were pronounced dead at the scene, were both wearing seatbelts. Yasso was a student at the University of Houston Business School and Thornton was a student at Texas Tech.
Tractor Trailer accidents typically don’t have good outcomes. My heart goes out to all the family and friends that will greatly miss these two students.
Studies show that 50% of truck-related accidents are two-vehicle crashes, and of those, 88% involve a semi-truck colliding with a non-semi. In wrecks involving 18 wheelers, 44% of people injured suffer incapacitating injuries. Tragically, approximately 9% die. This means that 53% of people driving other vehicles in truck-related accidents suffer an incapacitating injury or death as a result of a truck accident. This type of vehicle accident is higher than all other types of motor vehicle accidents in Texas.
