Vehicle Recall: Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Image result for 2016 Hyundai Genesis CoupeVehicles may not show signs of technical malfunctions until several years after the car has been released to the public. This has recently been the case with Hyundai, a car manufacturing company based in South Korea. Hyundai has recently announced that their car model “Genesis Coupe” will be recalled throughout the United States.

Why Is the Hyundai Genesis Coupe Being Recalled?

According to representatives from Hyundai and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Genesis Coupe is being recalled is because of an airbag malfunction. More specifically, there is a harness connector that has faulty wiring.

The faulty wiring makes airbag system malfunction for several reasons. First, the vehicle’s occupant classification system (abbreviated as OCS) cannot identify whether or not there is a passenger sitting in the passenger seat, which means that in the event of an accident, the passenger airbag might not deploy. Second, because the OCS is not working properly, additional airbags that would deploy in an accident would not deploy. This recall, according to Hyundai and NHTSA reports, would affect an estimated 84,500 Hyundai Genesis Coupes in the United States.

What Does This Airbag Malfunction Mean?

Essentially, if a Hyundai Genesis Coupe were to get into an accident, the driver and passengers inside would be at more risk for severe injuries due to the airbag malfunction. For example, if the Coupe were to be T-boned on the driver’s side, secondary airbags that would traditionally deploy at the time of an accident would not deploy because the OCS couldn't identify the impact.

How Do I Know If My Airbag Will Malfunction?

Luckily,  you can see whether your airbag will malfunction before you're in an accident. Look at the information dash (the car’s instrument panel). If there's a problem with the airbag, the airbag light will turn on.

It's important to follow NHTSA guidelines for the repair of recalled vehicles if your airbag light is on.
