Many people injured in an automobile accident in the Fort Worth- Arlington, TX area get offered a release by the other driver’s car liability insurance company right after the accident. Allstate and Progressive are particularly aggressive with this tactic. The usual pitch is “here’s a little money for your inconvenience if you sign this release.”  Many injury victims have called me after they’ve signed a release and want to know what their options are.  Well, stated simply, you have zero options.  If you sign the release, your claim is over.  You have no more legal rights to pursue compensation for your medical bills,, lost wages and pain and suffering.  I have folks come in to my law office with serious injuries, including those requiring surgeries, but had signed a release earlier on and want to try to get out of it.  I can’t help them out.  If you sign a release, you can’t later change your mind, even if your medical condition worsens.

I suggest you don’t ever sign a release on an injury case until you’ve spoken to a board certified injury attorney and make sure that signing the release is okay and is in your best interest.  There’s no rush to resolve these cases.  You should never sign a release until you are finished with your medical care and are sure that you are fully recovered. There’s no reason to take a small amount of money early on to sign a release.  I promise you, you’ll regret it later on.  So, be careful and remember the insurance company is not looking out for you—they’re looking out for their own bottom line. The more the insurance adjuster pays you, the less money the company makes.
