Because of the increasing number of reports about serious complications associated with surgical mesh used in pelvic organ prolapse procedures, the FDA has issued two safety warnings about mesh implants. The complications commonly associated with vaginal mesh include chronic pain, injury, the need for additional surgery and sometimes even death.
In 2011, the FDA issued an updated safety warning informing doctors and patients of serious complications related to the use of surgical mesh to treat POP. According to the FDA, it had not seen concrete evidence that the use of transvaginally-placed surgical mesh in POP repairs improved clinical outcomes any more than traditional surgeries that do not involve mesh.
