Arlington

Known today as a nationally recognized 2009 Playful City USA recipient, Arlington has grown leaps and bounds from its beginning as a mid-city between Dallas and Fort Worth. Officially founded in 1876, Arlington began as a farming and cotton ginning center along the Texas and Pacific Railroad. Today Arlington boasts a current population of over 370,000, is the third largest city in North Central Texas and is now the largest "mid" city in America.

As a 2009 Playful City USA recipient, Arlington has demonstrated its commitment to taking action for play and the city's resources for play and entertainment are ever present. Six Flags Hurricane Harbor and Six Flags Over Texas provide year round theme park entertainment for locals and visitors from around the world. In the summer, Six Flags Hurricane Harbor provides 47 acres of water park fun from the seven story free fall water slide, Der Stuka, to a laid back ride on the constant current of the Lazy River. At Six Flags Over Texas, thrills can be found on any of their 45 theme park rides, including the top wooden roller coaster on Earth, the Texas Giant, and the Superman: Tower of Power, the tallest ride of its kind in the world.

While theme park attractions are a definite draw to the city, Arlington has firmly made its mark in the sports arena with the home of the Texas Rangers- the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington- and the newly constructed, $1.15 billion new home of the Dallas Cowboys- Cowboys Stadium. Opening on April 1, 1994, the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington includes a 49,115 seat open air ballpark, a 17,000 sq. ft Legends of the Game Museum and Children's Learning Center and a Youth Ballpark. Opening with a bang on June 6, 2009, Cowboys Stadium in Arlington showed off all of its glitz and glamour with George Strait headlining a summer concert and its inaugural event. In addition to concert tours and all home Dallas Cowboys games, Cowboys Stadium in Arlington will also play host to major events like the 2011 Super Bowl, 2010 NBA All-Star game and 2014 NCAA men's basketball Final Four.

As Arlington attracts thousands from around the world for its entertainment and sports attraction, it has also been attracting scholars and students from around the globe for the academics that can be found at The University of Texas at Arlington.
