DePuy Orthopaedics Artificial Hip Recall

DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson Services, Inc. have recalled their defective hip replacements following the complaints of almost half the 93,000 patients that received the prostheses. The artificial hips were received by patients undergoing surgery between 2005 and 2010. Chief among the complaints about the artificial hips include chronic pain. In most cases, doctors are recommending the patient undergo further surgical revision to correct the problems, or in some cases a second hip replacement operation.

The devices affected by this recall are the DePuy Orthapaedics ASR XL Acetabular Hip Replacement System or ASR Hip Resurfacing System. What is unique about these devices is that the "cup" and "ball" components of the artificial joint are made of metal. While DePuy originally claimed this would give their prostheses a more natural-like movement, and greater durability, the problems which resulted in the recall are precisely because of this design decision.

When the metal-on-metal joint moves, extremely small fragments of metallic debris are chiseled off, causing loose ions within the patient's body. This in turn can lead to elevated levels of chromium and cobalt being released into the blood stream, causing metallosis. Studies of the disease suggest it is a likely cause of chromosomal damage and possibly even cancer.

As personal injury attorneys with a successful track record of handling medical malpractice and defective medical devices cases, we are currently accepting clients who experienced difficulties as a result of receiving these defective implants. If you received the artificial hips which are the subject of this recall but have not experienced any problems, testing is available to determine whether or not you are likely to experience issues in the future.
