Choose the Right Motorcycle Gear To Protect Yourself in an Accident

Motorcycle riders are passionate about riding, and consider it part of their lifestyle. Since motorcycle riders are going to ride in spite of the chances of having of an accident, it is very important to choose the right gear to prevent accidents.

Choose Gear with Reflective Properties

As a motorcyclist, one of the best things you can do to protect yourself and prevent an accident is to wear gear with reflective properties. One of the biggest arguments that drivers make when they get into motorcycle accidents is that they "just didn't see the motorcycle." If you wear reflective gear, you increase your chances of being seen. Wear a reflective vest over dark-colored jackets and pants, and wear a reflective helmet so other drivers can see you. You might also consider riding with your lights on even during the day to increase visibility.

Select Gear with Abrasion-Resistant Fabric
One of the most common injuries to motorcycle riders is sliding along the pavement when knocked off a bike. It is vital to wear abrasion-resistant fabric to help protect yourself. Wear Kevlar, or other synthetic materials with a high denier rating (at least 600 denier).

Wear Gear With Armor in the Right Places
Armored gear can help protect you even if you are knocked off your bike. You should wear jackets with CE-rated armor in the elbows, shoulders and back, and pants with knees and hips for maximum protection. Armored boots can help protect the small bones in your feet and prevent your ankles from twisting.

Many motorcyclists don't wear the right gear because they feel that the weather in Texas is too hot for heavy armored gear. Fortunately, mesh gear provides good air flow, and some mesh gear has high denier fabric on impact zones, like the arms and elbows. With the right mesh gear, you can still get the protection you need and enjoy good airflow even when you're riding on hot Dallas days.
