How Much Liability Insurance Does a Commercial Truck Have to Carry?

Unfortunately, dealing with the trucking company after your Dallas-Fort Worth traffic collision won't be easy. After a wreck, there can be tens of thousands of dollars on the line to cover your medical expenses, lost earnings and property damage. Trucking companies and their insurance agents don't want to pay out that kind of money, so they'll try to settle your claim for less than it's worth.

Luckily, trucking companies are required to carry minimum amounts of insurance. Even if the insurance adjuster gives you the run around, you should be armed with this knowledge - they can afford to pay you fair compensation.

Minimum Insurance Limits for Heavy Goods Vehicles

$750,000 – All motor carriers operating vehicles with a gross weight over 10,000 pounds (that transport non-hazardous materials) must have a minimum of $750,000 in liability insurance.

$1,000,000 – All motor carriers operating vehicles transporting materials classified as hazardous weighing over 10,000 pounds must have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance.

$5,000,000 - All motor carriers operating vehicles such as tanks or hopper-type cargo vehicles with a capacity in excess of 3,500 water gallons must have a minimum of $5,000,000 in liability insurance.

Minimum Insurance Limits for Heavy Passenger Vehicles

$1,500,000 – Any bus or passenger vehicle with a capacity up to and including 15 passengers must have a minimum of $1,500,000 in liability insurance.

$5,000,000 - Any bus, motor coach or other passenger vehicle with a capacity of 16 or more passengers must have a minimum of $5,000,000 in liability insurance.
