In 1856 Decatur was officially formed as a city under Texas legislature. It was first named Taylorsville after Zachary Taylor. However, the founder of Decatur did not like that name, so named it Decatur after naval hero Stephen Decatur.
Decatur is home to many local farmers, ranchers, and small family business owners. Its close proximity to the area's larger cities has made it a weekend rancher destination for people wanting to escape hectic city life.
