Denton serves as the county seat of Denton County and is the 11th largest city in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. European settlement began in the area throughout the mid-19th century and both the city and the county were eventually named in honor of John B. Denton, a preacher and lawyer who was killed in a battle against Keechi Indians in 1841. The city was incorporated in 1866.
North Texas Normal College (now the University of North Texas) was established in Denton in 1890, followed by the Girls' Industrial College (now Texas Woman's University) in 1903. Denton's evolution into the contemporary college town it is today occurred as the two universities increased in size over the past century, becoming ever more central to the city's economy and culture.
Today, the city is home to close to 120,000 permanent residents. Each year hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to the city to attend the annual Denton Arts and Jazz Festival which is partially responsible, along with the city's two higher education institutes for Denton's vibrant independent music scene. Norah Jones, Meat Loaf and Ray Orbison, along with members of the bands Bowling For Soup and Deep Blue Something all attended the University of North Texas in Denton.
