Steven Jacobs Syndrome (SJS) is often described as a milder form of Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) (also known as Leyll's Syndrome). Patients who have SJS may develop TEN as their condition worsens. Both are extremely serious skin conditions which involve rashes and bleedings across the body, face and genitals of the patient and inflammations of all facial and body orifices. These conditions can quickly develop over a matter of weeks often necessitating treatment similar to burn victims as within days of the initial symptoms appearing, large pieces of skin can slough off putting the patient’s life in even more critical condition. It is estimated that approximately 25 percent of Dilantin patients who develop TEN will result in a fatality. Patients who are of Asian descent and who carry the gene allele HLA-B-1602 are believed to have a significantly higher chance of developing SJS/TEN after taking Phenytopin.
Dilantin has also been linked to Erythema Multiforme. Symptoms include permanent skin damage and scarring, skin infection, pneumonitis, myocarditis, nephritis and hepatitis.
Approximately 27 percent of Dilantin patients who develop SJS will suffer from serious vision injuries including long-term eye damage or blindness.
