2010 Teens Against Distracted Driving (TADD) Campaign: Haltom High School Wins Contest

This fall, Fort Worth Accident and Injury Lawyer Mark A. Anderson has worked with six Tarrant County High Schools to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. Mark recently sponsored a contest which provided each school with pledge cards and flashy orange bracelets that read
I PLDG 2 NT TXT N DRV. The Student Council at each school obtains Students who signed the pledge received a free bracelet. The schools that participated were: Haltom, Central, South Hills, North Side, Richland and Colleyville Heritage.

Each of the participating schools used different methods to raise awareness to this dangerous and growing phenomenon. Several of the schools’ students made posters that promoted anti-texting and driving. One school gave startling statistics about the dangers of distracted driving through announcements broadcast to the entire student body every morning. Some schools showed informational videos to all the students through the cooperation of the home room teachers. Some students raised awareness the old fashion way--personal interaction in between classes and at lunch time. The techniques that the schools used were all diverse and I am proud that the member of these six Student Councils ran with the idea and accomplished the goal of getting the word out. In all, pledges to not text and driver were obtained from 5,380 local students. That is a whole lot of pledges!!

And the winner of this fall’s context is
Haltom High School! Congratulations! This time Haltom’s Student Council was able to obtain 73% of their students to pledge to not text while driving. Haltom also won last spring’s contest where they obtained the most pledges from their Student Body. Mark will soon award Haltom’s Student Council $500 in recognition for their efforts. It would be great if distracted driving could be eliminated simply by informing people of the dangers associated with it; however, that’s not the case. Repeating the message time after time, like Haltom has done, will make the most progress in changing the bad habits. And texting and driving is certainly a bad habit!!

Thank you to all the schools who participated in this contest. Hopefully, the 5,380 students who made the pledge will wear their orange bracelets which will serve as a reminder to their pledge.
