History of Actos

The dangerous drug attorneys at the Anderson Law Firm are reviewing Actos bladder cancer cases for possible litigation. In summer of 2011, the FDA made a warning about the type 2 diabetes drug Actos and its link to bladder cancer. According to the FDA, consumers who have used Actos for more than a year have an increased chance of developing bladder cancer. The lawyers at the Anderson Law Firm believe that the maker of Actos, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, has the obligation to properly research and warn consumers about the side effects that go along with their medications.

Actos History of Actos

After FDA approval, Actos (pioglitazone hydrochloride) was introduced to the market in 1999 by Takeda Pharmaceuticals and has quickly become one of the nation's best-selling Type 2 diabetes medications. Actos is a thiazolidinedione and is used for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes.

How Actos Works

Actos works by increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin and controlling blood sugar levels. When insulin sensitivity is increased, the sugar in your blood can pass through to your body more easily, instead of remaining in your blood and building up to dangerous levels. Actos works by helping to restore your body's proper response to insulin, thereby lowering your blood sugar. People with Type 2 diabetes must control their high blood sugar in order to prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems.

Possible Side Effects and Potential Dangers

New Actos warnings in the summer of 2011 by the FDA announced a link between the drug Actos and bladder cancer in long-term users. According to the interim report from the FDAs 10 year study of Actos, risk of bladder cancer appears to be higher in patients who have taken Actos for two or more years. Some of the warning signs of Actos bladder cancer include:
  • Painful urination
  • Blood in urine
  • Pain in back and lower abdomen
  • The constant urge to urinate
