Insurance Company Goal No. 2: Delay the Claim As Long As Possible

The insurance company has a huge advantage over you because it isn't in any hurry whatsoever to resolve your claim. Here's an example: An accident happens and you get hurt. You immediately start receiving medical bills in the mail. You are missing work and therefore you're unable to pay your household bills, much less the unexpected medical bills piling up. Usually, debt collectors are not far behind in making calls to your house. The insurance company is acutely aware of your unfortunate predicament, but it will still not be prompt in paying you. The reason? Insurance companies simply don't have to pay anyone until they are forced by a jury. Plus, the insurance company knows that the longer it holds onto its money, the more it can make in interest. Further, the company hopes that by stalling and dragging its feet you will accept a low-ball settlement offer due to the pressure of your mounting medical bills.

So, how do you counter the insurance company's advantage? The only way is to have a good lawyer on your side that will press and aggressively fight the insurance company. The closer a jury is to awarding you compensation, the more pressure is placed on the insurance company to pay you fair money. Sometimes the only way to get the insurance company to pay is to try the case in front of a jury and win. Often, just the threat of a trial will be enough to convince the insurance company to get out its checkbook.
