There are several programs available to motorcyclists to help foster safe riding and awareness throughout Texas. It is important as both a motorcycle and motor vehicle operator to be aware of the resources available to you.
The Texas Department of Public Safety created the Motorcycle Operator Training and Safety Program in 1983 and has trained more than 317,160 students. The goal of this course is to provide riders of all skill levels with safety advice, and help them to know what to do in different scenarios. The course is available through the Texas Department of Public Safety website.
The Arlington Police Department has also started a "Ride S.M.A.R.T." campaign which encourages riders to ride more responsibly. The acronym represents the following:
S- Safety equipment/Protection M- Motorcycle license A- Awareness (being alert of surroundings at all times) R- Responsible (riding sober) T- Traffic Laws
The last motorcycle awareness program that was launched last year in Texas is the "Look, Learn, Live" campaign. This program is aimed at both motor vehicle drivers and motorcyclists as its main audience.
For "Look" TxDot challenges motor vehicle drivers to "look twice" for motorcyclists before turning or changing lanes, to always give motorcyclists their own lane, and to stay as far back behind a motorcycle as you would with a car. The "Learn" segment of the program focuses on educating new motorcycle drivers and owners of the basics of operating a motorcycle. Lastly, the "Live" portion focuses on encouraging drivers to always wear proper safety equipment and always ride sober.
