Pantego, TX

Pantego, Tx

Pantego sits in the middle of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, bordering the town of Dalworthington Gardens and surrounded by the city of Arlington. Located in Tarrant County, the town covers a total area of appropriately two square miles. Originally incorporated in 1949, the town dissolved in February 1952 before reincorporating in May the same year. The earliest historical reference to the area was the year 1542 when Luis de Moscoso's ill-fated DeSoto Expedition camped in what is now the Village Creek area. Members of this group were the first white visitors to the area and reports suggest the explorers got along fairly well with the various Indian tribes living in the area.

After the Civil War, Colonel Frederick Foscue began acquiring land in the Pantego area and reportedly accumulated 3,360 acres. He was a dominant figure in the settlement of the Pantego area and is commonly regarded as the first Pantego land developer.

The legend of how Pantego got its name concerns a loyal and trusted Indian friend of Colonel Foscue, whose name was Pantego. When fellow tribesmen were moving to Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma, they stopped at the Foscue plantation and demanded that Pantego accompany them. When Pantego refused they murdered him. When Foscue later donated one acre of his land for school purposes he requested that it be named Pantego in honor of his friend.

Pantego is served by Arlington ISD and is zoned to Hill Elementary School, Bailey Junior High School and Arlington High School. Pantego Christian Academy's Arlington Campus has facilities which fall within the city limits of Pantego and Arlington.
