Plano sits between Richardson and McKinney, on US Highway 75 north of Dallas in Collin County and is the ninth largest city in Texas. In 1881, a city-wide fire destroyed most of the original buildings, but the city rebuilt itself and once again flourished throughout the next decade. Throughout the 1970s, Plano experienced a population explosion - increasing from 17,872 to 72,000 in just 10 years. Estimates put the current population at over 280,000.
Plano has long been forward-thinking with regards to its transportation plan and was the first city in Collin County to adopt a master plan for its road system which included using wide multi-lane highways allowing traffic to move throughout the city at faster speeds than in most towns. The city also participates in DART's public transport system, allowing residents the option to commute into Dallas by bus or light rail as an alternative to driving. The Dallas North Tollway, President George Bush Turnpike, SH 121 and SH 289 all provide convenient roadways for motorists to access the surrounding areas.
