How to Buy the Right Kind of Auto Insurance

In a perfect world, you would carry only liability insurance and not have to concern yourself with uninsured motorist coverage. Unfortunately, we live in a state with an extremely high percentage of drivers who don't carry any liability insurance at all (which is against the law). With over 20 percent of all cars on the road driving without any of the state-mandated liability insurance, it's extremely important that you carry uninsured motorist coverage.

Often, I receive inquiries from injured parties who want to make claims against drivers who don't have insurance. My first question is whether the caller carried uninsured motorist coverage on their own insurance policy. When the answer is "no, I have liability only," I have to give them the bad news that there's no insurance company responsible for compensating them for their damages. These callers often have already incurred thousands of dollars in medical bills and now they're struck trying to figure out how to pay them. Plus, they have a wrecked car and usually still have payments to make on that car. In fortunate situations where the caller has uninsured motorist coverage, they are in luck because they'll be able to pay their bills and receive compensation for their injuries.

It's very important to carry the right kind of insurance. I realize that if you've already been in a wreck it's too late to purchase insurance for an accident that has already occurred; however, it's not too late to protect yourself for the future no matter what the cost.
