Saginaw was founded in 1833 by a gentleman from Michigan, Jarvis J. Green. Mr. Green had hoped to name the city after Pontiac, Michigan, but the postal service rejected it so he named it after another Michigan town, Saginaw. The city is known for its railroad tracks and large grain elevators. The railroad tracks came in the latter half of the 1800s when Saginaw was the last stop on the railroad's southbound route to Fort Worth. The railroad allowed Saginaw to prosper and it allowed the grain storage and milling facilities to come to town. Saginaw still remains home to the largest grain storage facility in the world, now called Cargill. When it was known as Burrus Mills, it was the launching pad for the famous western swing band "The Light Crust Dough Boys."
Besides the railroad and grain elevators, there are many other thriving businesses in and around Saginaw. Some of the large industrial facilities include Trinity Industries, Universal Forest Products, Styrochem International, Northwest Pipe, Norton Metal and Bana Box to name a few. Additionally, Alliance Airport and Texas Motor Speedway are just 15 miles north of Saginaw and the Federal Bureau of Printing and Engraving facility is located just outside the northern city limits.
