Community Snapshot -- Burleson

The city of Burleson is located in both Johnson County and Tarrant County. Burleson is located about 12 miles south of Fort Worth, Texas. The population of Burleson in 2009 was about 34,350. The city has experienced unusually high growth in the last several years and is preparing to open its second high school. Currently, the city is served by Burleson High School, home of the Elks.

Burleson gets its name from Dr. Rufus C. Burleson, who was the President of Baylor University. Burleson was established in 1881 as a community, later developing into a town in 1912 and was re-built in 1938 as a city. In 1969, Burleson implemented a Home Rule Charter with a council manager form of government.

Burleson leapt onto the national map, when their hometown sensation, Kelly Clarkson, became the winner of American Idol Season 1. This city is also the home town of three-time Olympic Champion and the well known American Volleyball player, Stacy Sykora. In addition, the renowned prayer event "See you at the Pole" also owes its origins to this city.

Burleson is home to many indoor and outdoor recreational landmarks, as well as spiritual landmarks. Alsbury Baptist Church and the Boulevard Baptist Church are just a couple of the many churches that have found a home in Burleson. Various parks like Bartlett Park and Chisenhall Park are wonderful for afternoon picnics or a game of catch with the children and avid golfers can play to their heart's content at the Southern Oaks Golf Club.
